~We went to get the baby DYH from the breeder on Saturday, May 31st and from the moment our eyes met I just knew he was going to be quite a handfull! (Thus far he has not proved me wrong!)
I also decided that the name "Mikko" seemed to fit him best. It means "Gift from God" in Hebrew and pretty much sums up the way I feel about him!
~It was a long car ride back home, and with all the excitement "Mikko" was quite exhausted from the trip!
Here he is later that evening all settled into his new cage and sound asleep. In fact, he was sleeping so soundly he didn't even notice the camera flash!
~The next morning I got out of bed and before I even had a chance to wake up, took him out of his cage for a cuddle! He reached up and grabbed my earlobe and got me just right to bring blood, inflict pain and totally damage my pride that *I am very well educated on the behavior and dispositions of parrots!* (Or so I thought!)
Denny and I joked that maybe we should call him “Rambo” instead because he “drew first blood”!!
At the time I didn't find much humor in it though.
~Later that day after I was done sulking, Denny and I got him back out for some play and bonding time.
Being a baby who had just learned to fly, that seemed to be all he wanted to do and after a few scary moments of him bumping into walls (not to mention that he also knocked Sammy's urn over in the process!), we put him back in his cage before he could hurt himself.
I took him to the vet the very next day to have his wings clipped and he seemed to calm down quite a bit after that! (I really didn't want to do it but it was more for his safety than anything!)
~Here are a few pics of him playing with Denny after the wing clip....
*PS...That is not bird poopy on Denny's arm! He ran out to get the mail in the rain right before the picture was taken! Hehe!
~Getting a head scratch from "Mama"....
~Even though Mikko is a different breed of Amazon than Sammy was, sometimes I have to do a double-take when I look at him!
At night when he is all fluffed up in his cage or makes a familiar sound, it is almost like Sammy never actually went away....or that maybe he just returned, but in a different form.
~I find that very comforting!
